Brabender® Pharma USA, Inc. and Particle Sciences Cooperate to Expand Extrusion Capabilities

Particle Sciences Inc. (PSI), a leading pharmaceutical CRO is adding a Brabender® Mini-Compounder 12 mm twin screw extruder, plus an ATR Torque Rheometer with single screw extruder for co-extrusion applications, to its development and production lines.

This is Particle Sciences’ fourth extruder dedicated to drug/polymer combinations. According to Mark Mitchnick, Particle Sciences’ CEO, “The demand for cGMP extrusion is increasing. Needs range from hot melt extrusion for solid oral dosage forms to drug eluting devices. Particle Sciences is the leading CRO in this area having invested heavily in equipment, high potency compound handling infrastructure and proprietary modeling software. With injection molding, tube extrusion, coextrusion and the leading analytic support facility, we are working very hard to make sure our clients’ projects move as quickly as possible. In 2011 we successfully brought such products into the clinic and already have several scheduled for cGMP manufacturing in 2012. While there are several fine extruders on the market, Brabender® Pharma has focused their 12 mm on the pharmaceutical development space. Its ease of cleaning, full cGMP compliance and extensive data capture capabilities make it a valuable addition to rapid product development efforts.”

Kevin Van Allen, Brabender® Pharma’s V.P. of Sales & Marketing, adds “Particle Sciences is an innovative leader in pharmaceutical extrusion and we are very pleased to be working with them. With the placement of the Mini-Compounder at Particle Sciences, Brabender® Pharma clients will now have a US site for evaluation and development of their API’s from early stage and into cGMP production, including highly potent compounds. The 12 mm Mini-Compounder will be a truly valuable asset to Particle Sciences Inc. because its clamshell barrel, removable liner and segmented screw elements will offer numerous new processing capabilities to explore. As pharmaceutical extrusion processes are continually being refined, we feel that the 12 mm Mini-Compounder plus added co-extrusion capabilities will give PSI a world of future product development possibilities.”

Prep-Mill® Two Roll Mill is newly updated

The NEW C.W. Brabender® Laboratory Electrically Heated Prep-Mill® is a universal, heavy-duty machine designed for small-scale milling of elastomeric and thermoplastic materials. The Two-Roll Mill combines the features of precision construction, reliability and serviceability into a mobile and compact milling station, ensuring uniform batch-to-batch mixing characteristics. The electrically heated Prep-Mill® is designed to operate at temperatures up to 260°C, with an accuracy of ± 1°C.

THE DRIVE
A heavy-duty high torque system - the Prep-Mill® drive is designed to provide high torque output from a 2.5 HP sensor-less vector drive with built-in torque overload protection. Monitored by a digital DC amp meter with torque overload indicator, including a digital RPM indicator - variable roll speed of 0-30 RPM. There are dial gauges installed over the rolls to accurately determine the roll gap setting. In addition to the operator trip bar over the mill rolls, two operator 'kick plates' will also stop the drive when actuated. The 'kick plates' are permanently mounted on both sides of the mill. There is also an ‘emergency stop’ on top of the unit. A ‘Safety Guard’ is installed over the top of the rolls for added security. The entire drive is mounted on a heavy gauge mobile cart. The cart includes a cabinet for storage of tools and accessories.

FEATURES
The Electrically Heated Prep-Mill® utilizes improved transfer rolls coated with Acrotherm TK400 (RC 70), an extremely durable coating that substantially extends the life of the roll while providing top quality mirror finish and tolerances - suited for High Wear Resistance.

• Electrically Heated 4"x8" Acrotherm TK400 rolls polished to a mirror finish
• Individual Temperature Controllers to control roll temperature
• Adjustable gap from .005” to .195"
• Standard friction ratio of 1.3:1 or 1:1 for Calendering
• Safety trip bar and operator kick plates with coupled electrical interlock
• Contoured roll guides prevent material from 'creeping off' the rolls and into the bushings
• "Flip-up" design for easy cleaning
• Brass stripping knife permits quick, clean removal of milled stock
• A mixing volume of approximately 250ml, depending on gap setting and bandwidth
• ‘Safety Guard’ over the top of the rolls and dial gauges for accurate roll gap adjustment

C.W. Brabender® Instruments, Inc. announces alliance formed with Insent for sales of Taste Sensing System

C.W. Brabender® Instruments, Inc. is pleased to announce its alliance with Intelligent Sensor Technology, Inc. (Japan) as their sales representation in North America, Central America and South America for the revolutionary Taste Sensing System TS-5000Z .

The Taste Sensing System TS-5000Z employs the same mechanism as the human tongue through the use of multi-channel artificial lipid membrane sensors which imitate the taste reception of food goods and pharmaceuticals and interprets them as numerical data.  The quantification of taste data is handled via original algorithms and can be displayed in various ways through a rich array of graphing tools.  In addition to the evaluation of initial taste, the instrument also measures aftertaste – the persistent taste that remains in the mouth after food has been swallowed.  Even aspects of aftertaste such as “richness”, “sharpness”, “bitterness” and “astringency” can be measured.

C.W. Brabender® Instruments, Inc. is truly excited to bring this next evolution in taste sensory measurement to the North American, Central American and South American markets for use in a variety of fields including, but not limited to, Quality Control, Product Development, Marketing and Sales.  With more than 300 units already sold worldwide, we truly look forward to showing our territories the vast potential that this instrument has in both the food and pharmaceutical industries.
